Knowing which stage your business is in will help guide the process toward achieving your business goals. We have included some valuable information about each of these stages below.

Take our short quiz to find out what stage of the lifecycle your business is currently in.

Business Lifecycle Stages

Formation (Start up) Stage

This is an exciting time for the new owner (many times, partners) who have a dream about launching a new product, service, technology application, etc. In this embryotic stage, there are many aspects of the business that need to be well-planned and calculated.

Most important going forward is securing the right amount of capital to sustain the new entity until it reaches the “break-even” and “cash flow positive” stages as the business grows and prospers – 85% of business failures occur in the first 2-3 years from initially being undercapitalized from day one.

JESAM Enterprises will guide you to the best path forward to achieve your business goals. We will work closely with you to build out a 5-year planning framework and may elect to provide private equity funding for qualified candidates, helping to establish a solid foundation and providing for predictable growth and recurring revenue streams as the business grows.

Emerging Growth Stage

Businesses in this stage are facing the typical “points of inflection” associated with growth: increased competition, new product development and enhancements, and a more complex culture and set of HR issues to address and resolve. It is typically in this stage where owners (or perhaps now a management team), often develop a new set of strategic adjustments to move forward.

JESAM Enterprises can offer some meaningful initiatives to help you better navigate growth challenges, and may even elect to provide private equity funding for qualified candidates. Let's start working on your future!

Harvesting or "Cash Cow" Stage

At some stage of emerging growth, a reasonable percentage of small and mid-sized business owners enter what is known as “the harvesting stage”…enjoying the fruits of many years of hard work and commitment to being successful. There is plenty of cash, asset value and equity for the owner to pursue a “lifestyle” business. However, this stage is not indefinite.

Unless the owner decides to once again “re-engineer” the business model, and commit to further growth and re-investment of assets, the business begins a slow downward cycle known as "The Period of Decline Stage." It is at this point, when many wise owners begin to plan an exit strategy. It is time for a final strategic audit and business valuation to get a baseline on what the business is currently worth, and what the best “end game” might look like at the time of exit.

The old adage is true: “Your business is only worth what a buyer is willing to pay for it!” Let's start working on your exit strategy!

Period of Decline Stage

Businesses in this stage are facing some challenges and have big decisions to make. This is the time to act fast and develop a new set of strategic adjustments to move forward. We can offer some meaningful advice to help owners better navigate these challenges, and give them insight into the best plan to either move forward or exit the business.
